TOP TIPS ON HOW TO PREVENT GREASY HAIR

There’s nothing worse than when your hair is only on day 2 and your roots are already starting to look greasy… And what should you do when your scalp is oily? Wash it more? Wash it less? Try different products? Keep slicking it back so no one notices? There are so many questions and we’re here to help with some answers.

WHAT CAUSES GREASY HAIR?

From genetics to product choices, to an irregular washing routine, several factors could be contributing to that unwanted oiliness. Sweat can cause your scalp to become oily very quickly, so if you regularly work out, you’ll likely often have greasy roots. It could be that you’re applying conditioning products too close to the roots or you’re not giving your scalp a deep enough cleanse.

Whatever the reason, we’ve outlined our top tips that will help you rebalance your scalp and keep your hair looking and feeling fresh for longer.

TIP #1 - USE A CLARIFYING SHAMPOO FOR A DEEPER CLEANSE

Take a moment to check what shampoo you’re using and whether it’s right for your hair type. If you’re using a heavy formula, you’ll want to switch this out with a weekly clarifying wash. A clarifying shampoo will deeply cleanse the roots and remove any product build-up which could be causing the oiliness and weighing your locks down. This is very important if you often use styling products on your hair, such as oils, hairsprays, and any waxes or gels. If you’re finding any of these products difficult to remove, make sure to wash your hair twice – firstly to remove the build-up, secondly to cleanse. You can also try massaging into dry hair before rinsing thoroughly.

You can shop our range of shampoos online or pop into your nearest Supercuts salon to speak to our stylists. They can assess your hair and recommend the best product range for you.

TIP #2 – USE A LIGHT CONDITIONER AND ONLY APPLY TO MID-LENGTHS AND ENDS

If you’re applying conditioner to your roots, that’s where you’re going wrong as you’re applying moisture to an area which doesn’t need it. Our scalp produces natural sebum to keep roots nourished so you should only be applying conditioner to the mid-lengths and ends of your hair. Use a light formula to add nourishment without weighing your locks down. If you’re dealing with an oily scalp and dry hair, then you’ll want to buy a conditioner for combination hair. Again, avoid the root area and apply to damp, towel-dried hair. If hair is too wet, it won’t soak up the moisture from the product.

You can shop our range of conditioners online. If you’re unsure on your hair type or what products are best for you, come and speak to our stylists. They can provide expert advice and recommend the best options for you.

TIP #3 – SWITCH UP YOUR HAIR WASHING SCHEDULE

Do you wash your hair every single day? By washing hair too frequently, you could be training your scalp to produce more oil than necessary. Our scalp has sebaceous glands, responsible for producing oil to protect our hair and scalp. Every time we wash our hair, we stimulate these glands, prompting them to produce more oil. Therefore, excessive washing doesn’t necessarily lead to cleaner hair; it can make it greasier. These glands can also produce more oil when stimulated by extreme hot or cold temperatures. You should try washing your hair every other day or less frequently if possible. When you do wash, opt for warm rather than hot, and use gentle circular motions to massage shampoo into your scalp rather than vigorous scrubbing.

TIP #4 – REGULARLY CLEAN YOUR BRUSHES AND HAIR TOOLS

How often do you clean your hairbrushes, combs, and styling tools? Go on, admit it. It’s not that often, is it? These tools tend to accumulate product build-up and other grime with each use, which can transfer back to your hair, and leave you with oily roots. To prevent this, we recommend giving your tools a quick cleanse every two to three weeks. For wooden brushes or combs, simply run them under the tap, or for plastic ones, soak them in a sink full of water. Apply a drop of shampoo and delicately wash the bristles, making sure to remove any trapped hair or product residue. Rinse thoroughly and let them air dry. For straighteners or curling irons, make sure they are unplugged and cool before wiping the plates down. Allow these to dry before plugging them back in again.

By incorporating these tips into your hair care routine, you'll be on your way to saying goodbye to greasy hair for good. So go ahead, give your hair the love and attention it deserves, and enjoy the results of refreshed locks
