Just like we protect our bodies from the cold, our hair also needs protection during the winter months. The cold can make your scalp dry and your hair brittle because of lower temperatures. To keep your hair strong, smooth and hydrated during the chillier months, you’ll want to carry on reading and make a note of our top hair maintenance tips this winter!

 

Avoid frequent hair washes

Frequently washing your hair, strips it of its natural oils causing dryness and irritation. Try to extend your hair wash days the best you can. When hair wash day comes around, use a sulphate-free product with moisturising elements.

 

Condition your hair

During the winter months, it is important to condition your hair for deep hydration and nourishment. After shampooing your hair, apply your conditioner from the mid-lengths to the ends of your hair. If you suffer from dry or split ends, concentrate on conditioning those the best you can to achieve the best results. Leave the conditioner in your hair for a few minutes and rinse with water.

 

Don’t step out with wet hair

It goes without saying but always dry your hair before you go outside. Cold air expands the hair shafts making it prone to breakage. Give yourself and your hair extra time to air dry to protect it from the harsh winter air.

 

Hold back on the heat!

Your hair is already delicate in the winter and using heat styling tools can leave hair feeling brittle causing hair breakage. Experiment with different ways to style your hair without using heat such as updo’s, twists or braids. Why not embrace your natural hair texture? Allow your hair to air dry and use a microfibre towel. They are gentler on your hair, absorb water faster and helps reduce friction and drying time.

 

Treat yourself to a conditioning hair mask

Adding a deep, nourishing hair mask once a week to your routine can ensure overall hair health. In the winter, the cold air dries out your hair much faster. Because of this it is a good idea to deep condition your hair more often than usual. This will help replenish the moisture on your hair and scalp. A hair mask with nourishing and moisturising ingredients can also enhance hair growth, add shine and soften the hair. Leave-in conditioners are also great for providing additional protection from dryness.
