So, you’ve just washed your hair, feeling fresh and fabulous, but a few hours later you’re roots, and scalp are already feeling oily and greasy. Sound familiar? You’re not alone.
If you are looking to solve your oily scalp worries, you are in the right place. Here are 10 simple tips to keep your hair in check and feeling fresh all day long.
Washing your hair
When it comes to washing your hair, double cleanse with a lightweight shampoo. By double cleansing you can remove any excess build up and oils that can be sitting on your scalp. Don’t let the oil build up. Your hair will thank you!
Shampoo savvy
Using the right shampoo is key. Look for products specifically designed for oily hair as these will help eliminate excess oil without drying out your scalp. Avoid heavy, moisturising shampoos as these are normally designed for people with dry hair.
Treat yourself to a scalp scrub
Scalp scrubs can work wonders on your scalp as they help get rid of excess oil, product buildup, and dead skin cells. Introduce a scalp scrub into your haircare routine once a week and watch the difference it makes. Remember to keep it to once a week to avoid irritating your scalp.
Avoid touching your hair
We know it can be hard to avoid running your hands through your hair sometimes, but it’s one of the worst offenders when it comes to spreading oil. Every time you run your fingers through your hair, you transfer oils from your hands to your scalp. Try to resist the urge and if you need to adjust your hair, use a comb or brush instead.
Eat a balanced diet
Just like your skin, what you eat can really affect your scalp too! Cut down on sugary foods and saturated fats. Try to eat a balanced and healthy diet incorporating vitamin A, C and E. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water too! Hydration is key for keeping your scalp and hair in balance.
Go light on hair products
Heavy styling products like thick creams and gels can weigh down your hair and make your scalp oiler. Instead, opt for lightweight formulas that won’t leave product build up or residue on your hair as this can clog your scalp’s pores.
Only condition your ends
When it comes to conditioning your hair, it should only be applied to the ends of your hair. If you condition quite high up onto your hair and onto your scalp this can cause your hair to become oily and greasy. Again, make sure you are using a lightweight conditioning product and apply this from the mid lengths to the ends of your hair.
Keep your brushes in check
Make sure your hairbrushes are washed and clean. Any product build up or oils that are on your brushes will just get spread around your hair, making it even more oily. Clean your brushes every week if you can to keep your hair fresher for longer.
Don’t let your hair air dry
After washing your hair, make sure you dry it. Apply a heat protectant before doing so to protect your hair from the heat. Letting your hair air dry can let it get oily and leaving you back at the start of this process.
Relax and de-stress
Stress can affect our hormones and in turn this can affect your skin and scalp. Take some time to yourself to switch off and relax. Go for a walk, read a book, catch up with friends or watch your favourite TV programme!
