Scalp and haircare with Psoriasis

Scalp psoriasis can be harder to manage than psoriasis on other areas of the body because hair makes it tricky to treat. The scales can become thick, itchy, and uncomfortable. Managing it well means using the right products and gentle hair-care habits.

At Supercuts, your stylist can look at your hair and scalp and recommend the best in-salon treatments and at-home care. If needed, they may also suggest seeing your GP or a certified trichologist for further support.

What Is Scalp Psoriasis?

Scalp psoriasis is a type of plaque psoriasis that shows up as red, raised patches covered with white or silvery scales. It can appear anywhere on the scalp, including the hairline, behind the ears, and sometimes onto the forehead or neck.

Common signs include itching, mild hair shedding, and thick flakes that cling to the scalp. Symptoms can range from light flaking to heavy scaling that feels sore or irritating.

The exact cause isn’t known, but triggers can include:

  • Stress
  • Skin injuries
  • Cold weather
  • Illness or infections
  • Certain medications

If symptoms persist, it’s important to get a proper diagnosis from a GP or trichologist.

How to Care for a Scalp with Psoriasis

Gentle, consistent care helps reduce irritation and flare-ups. The right at-home routine is key.

When washing your hair:

  • Use lukewarm water, not hot.
  • Be gentle. Massage with your fingertips, not your nails.
  • Avoid scratching or scrubbing.
  • Rinse products out thoroughly to prevent build-up.
  • Pat dry with a soft towel rather than rubbing.

Regularly removing flakes can help with comfort. Scalp oils or treatments can soften plaques and make them easier to lift away.

Weather can also affect the scalp. Sun exposure, wind, and cold air can make symptoms worse. Hats or scarves can help protect the area outdoors.

If flakes become heavy or symptoms get worse, speak to your Supercuts stylist. They can suggest different products or treatments and may advise seeing a medical professional if needed.
