How to layer your haircare products

With so many hair products out there, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. What do you need? And what order should you use it in? Once you get the basics right, your hair and scalp will feel healthier, nourished and easy to style.

Step One: Get to know your hair

Before buying any products, it is important to understand your hair type and needs. Using the wrong formulas or products can have the opposite effect of the desired look and finish you are trying to achieve.
Ask yourself:

  • Is your hair coloured, bleached or permed?
  • Does your hair absorb moisture easily or not?
    • Low porosity – struggles to absorb product
    • High porosity – dries quickly, often frizzy or dry
  • What is your natural hair texture?
    • Straight
    • Wavy
    • Curly
    • Coily

Knowing this helps you build a routine that works for you.

Why the order of your products matters

Layering your products in the tight order helps each one do its job properly. Using them incorrectly or in the wrong order can stop products from absorbing and lead to build up on the hair and scalp.

You don’t need to use every product on every wash. Keep it simple, stay consistent and match your routine to your hair goals and needs.

Step Two: The correct haircare order

Pre-shampoo
This is optional and isn’t needed on every wash day. Pre-shampoo helps prep your hair and scalp before washing. They can help with dryness, oiliness, breakage or damage. Some work alone but some need pairing with a matching shampoo. Always read the recommendations on the label.

Shampoo

Apply shampoo to your scalp and massage gently in circular motions. Let the lather run through your mid-lengths and ends. Double cleanse is always recommended. The first wash removes dirt and build up. The second wash cleans the scalp.

Hair Mask

Hair Masks are great when your hair feels extra dry or damaged. If your hair needs extra nourishment, then adding a hair mask to your routine would be ideal. Use once a week as a treat for yourself and your hair. Apply the mask before your conditioner and let it work its magic for the recommended time for maximum benefit.

Conditioner

Conditioner is essential, just not on your scalp or roots. Use the matching conditioner from your shampoo range to compliment and to get best results for your hair. Apply to the mid-lengths and ends only and leave on for the suggested time before washing away.

Leave-in treatments

Once you have finished with your hair wash and normal shower routine, it is time for a leave-in treatment. Choose a leave-in based on your hair goals such as strength, hydration, repair or frizz control. This step helps protect your hair throughout the day.

Heat protection

This step is non-negotiable. If you are using any head tools this step is a must to help protect the hair from intense heat. Heat protectors need to be applied before styling with any hot tools so they can activate and protect the hair. Oils and creams with a heat protect feature may help but a dedicated heat protectant will be much more beneficial to the hair.

Hair oil or serum

This is your finishing smooth and shine step. Hair oils can add moisture and shine whereas serums can help smooth frizz and polish your final look. Using sparingly and apply as one of the last steps in your routine.

Finishing sprays

Once your hair is fully dry and styled, this is when your finishing sprays come in. Use a hairspray for extra hold or a texture spray for volume and movement. Never use on wet hair as this can cause stickiness and build up.
Bonus tip: Just like your skin, your hair needs SPF too, especially when exposed to sun.

Your hair routine should be as unique as you are. Choosing the right products makes all the difference in reaching your hair goals.
