WINTER HAIR CARE: TOP TIPS TO TREAT DRY HAIR

WINTER HAIR CARE: TOP TIPS TO TREAT DRY HAIR

As the cold weather sets in, our hair often bears the brunt of the harsh conditions, leading to issues like split ends, frizz, static, and dryness. To combat these problems, Creative Director Kieron Fowles, shares valuable insights and tips for maintaining healthy and hydrated hair during the colder seasons.

WHY DOES WINTER DAMAGE YOUR HAIR?

Pollution and the change in temperature can break the hair’s natural barrier. Cold weather and higher use of central heating can severely dry out your strands.

Further damage can come from general wear and tear, not treating your hair with the correct methods or products and using heated tools more often with not being able to let it naturally dry in the summer sunshine.

There are many factors that can damage hair in winter, but there are even more things you can do to treat here. Keep reading for our top picks.

HOW TO PREVENT DRY HAIR IN WINTER

Tip #1 – Get regular trims.

Sometimes your ends will be so dry that you may need a professional treatment and cut every 4-6 weeks, even if it’s just to take the very ends off.  This will help to replenish and restore the overall look and feel of the hair, promoting healthy hair growth.

Tip #2 – Use professional quality shampoo.

Always use a good quality salon professional hair care routine for cleansing, conditioning, and treating.  There are lots of different ranges and types of products for all hair types so whether you’re dealing with a dry and itchy scalp, thinning hair, hair fall, damage, or seeking products for moisturising and repairing – there’s a customised solution for you.

Speak to your stylist who can recommend products for your hair and scalp needs.

Tip #3 – Use a nourishing conditioner or mask.

After shampooing, reduce the water out of the hair with a towel or squeeze the hair well. Use a salon-quality conditioner through your mid length and ends and massage into the hair. If it’s very dry opt for a hair mask and leave on for as long as possible and wrap in a microfibre towel - this will help to nourish the hair and prevent frizz. Rinse out with lukewarm water, avoid using hot water.

Tip #4 – Invest in leave-in conditioning products.

If your hair is very dry, a leave in conditioner or hair oil is a great way to add moisture.  Oils also help tame the hair and can be used daily. This will help to keep the hair looking nourished and healthy.

Tip #5 – Use heat protection when styling.

The most important step when using heated tools is protection! There are many great quality salon professional styling products which provide heat protection.  Heat protection is essential, even if you only style with a hairdryer.  Let the hair part air dry so you don’t put too much heat in the hair when drying or blast on a cool air to remove most of the water.
