It is officially one week until the release of the 2023 Barbie movie when we see Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in all their blonde glory. We’ve all felt the glamour in pink the past few months seeing endless brand collabs, blonde hair transformations, and Barbie inspired outfits and make-up. But you know what we’re living for... Barbie hairstyles! In the movie trailer we see Barbie rocking some styles that will no doubt become staple looks once the movie hits. We’re here to discuss those looks and show off our very own Barbie inspired hairstyles by our Creative Director, Kieron Fowles, so you can become a Barbie girl in your very own Barbie world this summer.
Barbie’s Half-Up Half-Down
In the trailer we see Barbie in her bubble-gum pink Corvette wearing an adorable, voluminous half-up half-down style which is finished off with a pink bow to match her outfit. One of our favourites which of course we had to recreate, but with our own spin! Though we love Barbie’s fringe and face framing tendrils, Kieron opted for a slicked back high half-up pony to show off the face a little more and provide an option for those who don’t have a fringe. We know pink may not be for everyone so decided instead to go with a wearable black blow that would match any outfit, and place this at the front rather than have the party in the back like Barbie, to make it a statement feature.
Barbie’s Night Out Glam Blowout
2023 said turn up the volume and Barbie listened! We see her in the trailer on a night out with the most gorgeous bouncy blowout. The look features a side part with an eye-popping accessory and effortless curls which float along her shoulders. An iconic look which could be worn for all sorts of occasions. Kieron recreated this look but added a sprinkle of vintage to it. He kept the romantic side part, added a bit more volume to the front side piece, and brushed and smoothed out the hair for an elegant soft wave throughout.
Barbie’s Chic Updo
This Barbie means business, with hair pinned up so it doesn't get in the way on her mission! She is seen in the movie sporting a messy beehive, paired with a 60s / 70s style headband, and loose tendrils out at the front. Kieron took his own creative spin on this look and instead stepped a little forward into the 90’s after seeing 90’s trends resurface this year. Leaving out the accessory so the hair would be the focus, he curled all sections of the hair and pinned this up high so that it could still be seen from the front. He also left longer tendrils and curled these slightly to frame the face. Very similar to Barbie in style, just a little extra glam.
Barbie’s Ponytail Pin-Up
Now this look is... ICONIC! Not only do we see Margot Robbie rocking a vintage pin-up, but it’s actually the exact look from the very first model of Barbie which was designed in 1959. From the retro curly fringe, all the way to the wrapped ponytail in the back. Everything about this is *chefs kiss*. Now whilst we love the retro look, it may not be to everyone’s taste, so Kieron decided to put a modern spin on it which anyone can wear. He opted for the slicked back pony (a modern classic), then curled the ends of the hair and brushed these out to add volume and shape. Finally, he added the finishing touch by wrapping a piece of hair around the pony to dress it up.
